Acronym Alert: Lookout for MICE

The recent Spring VON show was the locus for the birth of a new acronym - MICE (a contraction for Media, Internet, Communications and Entertainment). As described by VON Magazine’s Editor-In-Chief, Doug Mohney, the “MICE revolution” is about “taking the individual ingredients of video and voice and mixing them together in new and creative ways outside of traditional thinking.”

One way to understand MICE is by looking to the new generation service providers that seek to combine Web 2.0, Voice 2.0 and Telco 2.0 into a compelling user experience. Or, as described by Daniel Berninger, the swarm of oddly named companies that are utilizing the Internet to give the communicating public an alternative to the lumbering Telco elephants. Another way is by looking to the new generation of multimedia devices that aim to meld the the PC, home entertainment and mobile experiences into a new connected lifestyle (sometimes referred to as the third screen). Apple’s soon-to-be-released iPhone is a great example.

While I am not particularly fond of the acronym, I think the sentiment is right on. Not least of all because it is an embodiment of the converging trends that drive Solegy’s business as a service delivery platform at the crossroads of voice, applications, content and networks.
